SANDUSKY — Three Mayville High wrestlers placed first in their weight classes at a 15-team tournament here Saturday. They were Christian Lefler in the 125-pound class, Luke Middleton (145A) and Jake LaValley (145B).
Logan Hulley (171B) placed second in his weight class for the Wildcats. Four Mayville wrestlers placed third in their classes: Jordan Birmingham (103), Ben Hulley (135), Gabe Smith (152B) and Zach Lefler (140).
“We will have a few ups and downs with our team this year as we are very young,” stated Mayville coach Mark Cooper. “Our progress is on schedule and we should be just fine by the end of the season, and I am very happy with the way the team is coming along.”
Six Mayville wrestlers now boast winning records on the season: sophomore Christian Lefler (19-4, 125 pounds), sophomore Hulley (15-8, 135 pounds), sophomore Zach Lefler (14-9, 140 pounds), sophomore Jake LaValley (14-9, 145 pounds), junior Luke Middleton (11-5, 145/152 pounds) and freshman Jackson Schenk (13-8, 285 pounds).
On Jan. 7 in Vassar, the Wildcats fell to Marlette 52-30 but beat Vassar 48-24. Four Wildcats went 2-0 on the day including: Christian Lefler (125), Jacob Eldred (130), Ben Hulley (135) and Luke Middleton (145/152). The split pushes the Wildcats record to 6-10 on the season.
