MARLETTE — Coach Cathy Storm’s Marlette Red Raiders ran out to a 25-4 first-quarter lead against Cass City here Tuesday night, pulling away for a 54-15 victory.
Marlette extended its lead to 38-6 at the half, outrebounding the Red Hawks, 39-13.
Haley Cross led the Red Raiders with 21 points, while MacKenzie Kelly scored 13 and Morgan Klein grabbed nine rebounds. Emily Schaub contributed eight points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Cass City (2-7 overall, 0-3 Greater Thumb Conference West) will be off until next Tuesday when it hosts Laker High. Marlette (8-2, 3-0 Greater Thumb Conference East) will be at home Thursday night against Harbor Beach.
Millington 72, North Branch 39: The Cardinals used a balanced scoring attack and a team defensive effort to push their winning streak to four games. Elizabeth Selich had a double-double for Millington with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Haley Trickey finished with eight points, nine assists, eight rebounds and seven steals for Millington, while Hailey Murray and Ashlee Chema both scored 14 points for the Cardinals. Molly Wolfington contributed 12 points and seven rebounds. The Cardinals had 19 assists and 20 steals on the night. Aerial Skinner led the Broncos with 14 points. Millington (4-4, 4-2) will be on the road against Frankenmuth on Thursday night, and North Branch (0-8, 0-6) will be at Bridgeport.
Frankenmuth 37, Birch Run 35: The Eagles picked up a big conference victory Tuesday night, knocking off the previously undefeated Panthers at home. Holding a 15-14 halftime lead, Birch Run (8-1, 5-1) jumped out to a seven-point lead early in the third quarter, before a Frankenmuth timeout. After the timeout, the Eagles rallied with a run of their own, finishing the quarter with a four-point lead. The fourth quarter was back and fourth, before Frankenmuth’s Madison Wiskur and Kendra Kujat each knocked down important buckets at the end of the quarter. Kujat led all scorers with 13 points, while Madison Walter added eight and Brayene Benner grabbed 11 rebounds for Frankenmuth. The Eagles (8-1, 6-0) will be at home Thursday night against Milliington.
Reese 54, Harbor Beach 45: The Rockets trailed 19-8 after the first quarter on the road, but fought back for the win. “We played a great last three quarters,” said Reese coach Denny Gruber, whose team upped its record to 5-3 overall. Reese star Reyna Frost picked up two fouls less than three minutes into the game and Gruber substituted for her. Frost returned and finished with a team-high 16 points, while adding 13 rebounds and four blocked shots. Rocket center Emily Fleischmann contributed 10 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots. Reese guard Abbey Ackerman added eight points while Rocket guard/forward Katie Hartman pitched in with seven points. “Hartman had a nice game for us,” Gruber said. Jaime Weber led the host Pirates with 17 points. Reese, 1-0 in the Greater Thumb Conference West Division, hosts conference foe Vassar on Thursday.
Kingston 53, Caseville 8: Coach Jay Green’s Cardinals took to the road for a victory along M-25 in Huron County, flying to a 37-4 halftime lead. “Our interior passing led to a number of good looks against their zone,” Green said. Kingston (9-2, 6-0), received14 points from Cassidy MacGuire and 10 apiece from Jenna Boyl and Sarah Savage. Maddie Cofer added eight for the Cardinals.
Caro 42, Essexville Garber 37: The Tigers led 22-20 at halftime and edged past visiting Garber on Tuesday night. Melissa Cockerill led Caro with 16 points, with Sarah Brown adding 11 and Kaila Beckrow contributing six. “We battled ourselves tonight for a lot of the game,” said Caro coach Jeff Sauser. “We just couldn’t get anything going. You have to give Garber credit. They picked it up, defensively.” Carlie Hepinstall led the Dukes with 16 points. Caro (5-3, 4-2) travels to Birch Run on Thursday.
Mayville 47, Caseville 17: The Wildcats earned their first win of the season, grabbing their first conference win in the process. Mayville jumped out to a 12-3 lead after the first quarter, and held an 18-10 halftime lead, before running away with the game in the second half outscoring Caseville 29-7. Jenna Franks led Mayville, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, while Jimi Harris contributed 13 points. six rebounds, and five steals. Miranda Zaremba had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats. Mayville (1-6,1-5) will be at home Friday night as the look for another conference victory against North Huron.
Owen-Gage 29, Flint International Academy 19: The Bulldogs journeyed to Genesee County and came away with a Michigan Summit League victory over the hosts. Owen-Gage is now 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
