VASSAR — Unionville-Sebewaing Area traveled to Vassar on Tuesday night for a Greater Thumb Conference West Division game, with a conference showdown looming on Thursday at home against rival Reese.
The Vulcans, however, gave USA a tussle, falling 42-38.
USA, now 6-2 overall, is 4-0 in the conference heading into Thursday’s battle against Reese, also unbeaten in the conference at 3-0 after thrashing Bad Axe on Tuesday night. The Rockets are 7-3 overall.
Reese 61, Bad Axe 17: The Rocket offense was red hot Tuesday night scoring 52 points in the first half, including 31 in the second quarter alone. Reese was led by Reyna Frost who had 17 points, seven steals, seven blocks, seven rebounds, and five assists. Maddie Coulter added 12 points for Reese, and Paige Smith added 10. Kayla Ratajczak and Emily Fleischmann added six points apiece for the Rockets. The Reese defense held the Hatchets to only seven points in the second half.
Frankenmuth 58, Ortonville Brandon 33: The Eagles pushed their win streak to nine games Tuesday night as they beat the Blackhawks on the road in a non-conference game. Brayene Benner led a balanced scoring attack that saw eight players score for the Eagles. Benner filled the stat sheet with 19 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, five assists and three blocks. Madison Walter added 13 points for the Eagles, while Kendra Kujat chipped in 11 points. Frankenmuth (10-1, 7-0) travels to LakeVille on Thursday in a conference game.
Marlette 64, Imlay City 29: The Red Raiders used a 23-6 scoring run in the first quarter, and a 33-18 advantage in the second half to knock off the Spartans in a non-conference game Tuesday night. Haley Cross led Marlette with 20 points and eight rebounds, while MacKenzie Kelly had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Caitlin Quade added eight points and six assists for the Red Raiders. Marlette (10-2, 4-0) will be at Sandusky Friday night.
Kingston 46, Carsonville-Port Sanilac 20: The Cardinals jumped out to an 18-7 first-quarter lead and held the Tigers to a total of only five points in the second and third quarters en route to the NCTL victory Tuesday night. “This was one of our better games in terms of passing,” said Kingston coach Jay Green. “We made the extra pass and got a lot of good looks.” Sarah Savage led the Cardinals with 14 points, and Cassidy MacGuire added 13. Kingston (10-2, 7-0) travels to Deckerville Monday.
Owen-Gage 19, Caseville 16: “It was not a pretty game, but a win’s a win,” Owen-Gage coach Mike Sutherland said of his squad’s triumph Tuesday night in Caseville. The Owen-Gage victory moves the Bulldogs to 6-4 overall. Courtney Southgate sparked the winners with eight points, while Caseville was led by Courtney Pattengill with 12.
Laker 66, Cass City 44: Laker High pulled off a win on the road Tuesday night in a Greater Thumb Conference West Division matchup. Cass City, 1-9 overall and 0-4 in the conference, hosts Mayville on Thursday night.
Mount Morris 66, Akron-Fairgrove 24: The Panthers traveled from Genesee County up to Fairgrove on Tuesday night, applying a full-court press from the start to take control of the game, 18-0. “They ran a press from the start and it gave us problems though we kind of solved it later in the game,” said Akron-Fairgrove coach Andy Beauvais. The Vikings rebounded in the first half a bit, though. Mount Morris, sparked by freshman guard Jayla Chaney with 21 points for the game, led 34-19 at halftime. “We were still hanging around at the half,” Beauvais said. Mount Morris outscored the hosts 35-5 in the second half, though. Megan Hiser led Akron-Fairgrove with six points. The Vikings, 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the Michigan Summit League, travel to Owen-Gage for a 6 p.m. varsity girls basketball game. The boys varsity game between Owen-Gage and Akron-Fairgrove, also at Owen-Gage on Friday, occurs at 7:30 p.m.
Deckerville 56, Mayville 27: The Wildcats dropped a conference game at home Tuesday night against the Eagles. Mayville fell behind 40-9 in the first half. Jenna Franks led the Wildcats with six points, and Jimi Harris had three points and 11 rebounds. Jenna Genoff led the Eagles with 10 points. Mayville (1-8, 1-6) will be at Cass City on Thursday.
