FAIRGROVE — Adam Moore was pinching himself Monday night when his Akron-Fairgrove boys basketball team — playing without point guard Jarod Ruiz — led Michigan Summit League power Bay City All Saints late in the first quarter.

“We were leading, 13-12, and we were hot,” Moore said. “But they have just too many athletes.”

Such as Justin Bates, who scored 19 points in the second quarter to help power the Cougars to a 71-33 road victory.

“I was a little worried in the first quarter because in the last game we gave up 22 offensive rebounds and in the first quarter tonight, we gave up six,” said All Saints coach Jason Brzezinski , whose team moved to 4-1 in the league and 7-4 overall. Akron-Fairgrove fell to 1-3 in the league and 7-3 overall.

International Academy of Flint leads the MSL with an unbeaten record in league play.

“I was a little concerned early because we had a good practice yesterday, and brought the effort in practice, but it didn’t carry over into that first quarter,” Brzezinski said.

Bay City All Saints picked up the offense in the second and third quarters against Akron-Fairgrove, outscoring the Vikings 41-10 in those two periods to put away the game.

Bates “struggled in the first quarter and he struggled in the last game, but he started attacking the basket a little more and getting some easy buckets,” Brzezinski said.

Bates finished the game with 21 points for the Cougars, with Trevor Ambroziak adding 17, Jacob Lesniak scoring 13 and Josh Dorion pitching in with 12.

Austin Carter led Akron-Fairgrove with 13 points, while Jeremy Verhelle and Dylan Polk scored eight apiece.

With Akron-Fairgrove point guard Ruiz absent due to the flu, “we had a lot of guys playing different positions tonight,” Moore said.

“Adrian Vliet, who usually plays in the post, was playing wing,” Moore noted.

The Vikings committed 19 turnovers in the first half, as All Saints employed several different defensive schemes. A ballhandler such as Ruiz could have reduced the turnovers.

“Jarod (Ruiz) is one of those kids who says ‘I don’t think I’m very valuable,’ but I say ‘Oh yeah, you are,’” Moore said.

The Vikings play at league-leading International Academy of Flint on Friday.

“I call this ‘Hell Week,’” Moore said.
