Boys Basketball Roundup: Pardee steps up for Millington, Good records triple-double for O-G, Kingston fends off Deckerville

MILLINGTON — Millington’s boys basketball team played without high-scoring guard Austin LeVan against Caro here Friday night, but Shawn Pardee rose to the occasion.

Pardee tallied a game-high 37 points to help lead the Cardinals past the Tigers, 61-56.

“We won with a complete team effort,” said Millington coach Shane LeVan. “Everybody got involved and played hard, and played very well.”

Pardee connected on 18 of 18 free throws, but it was his defense on Caro scorer Bailey Krueger that impressed coach LeVan.

Krueger scored six in the contest, while Caro’s Alex Phillips pitched in with 18 points and Brandon Tomlinson scored 14. The Tigers trailed 23-18 at halftime and 42-34 after three quarters.

Millington’s Jimmy Reed added seven points and eight rebounds, while Caleb Wascher scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds for the Cardinals.

Reese 72, Bay City All Saints 66: Jared Schrader knocked down 27 points and Kyle Gnatkowski added 12 to power the Rockets to the Greater Thumb Conference West Division win on Friday night in Bay City. Justin Bates led All Saints with 29 points while Josh Dorion added 12. Reese moved to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Bay City All Saints 63, Owen-Gage 39: All Saints went on a 15-2 third-quarter scoring run, which proved to be the difference against the Bulldogs in this Michigan Summit League game in Owendale on Thursday night. Owen-Gage trailed All Saints 35-23 at halftime, and the Cougars pushed their lead to 50-23 following the third quarter. Dan Good recorded a triple-double for Owen-Gage with 11 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. Jacob Wright added 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Josh Dorion led All Saints with 20 points. Owen-Gage (2-9, 0-5) hosts International Academy of Flint on Monday.

Frankenmuth 71, North Branch 56: The Broncos kept this Tri-Valley Conference matchup close for three quarters, but the Eagles took over in the fourth quarter to grab the victory. Frankenmuth held a 39-38 halftime lead, and led by only six points at the end of the third. In the fourth quarter, however, the Eagles outscored North Branch 17-8. Brady Wood led a balanced Frankenmuth scoring attack that saw eight players find the scoring column. Wood scored a game-high 21 points while Zac Janson scored 15, and Mario Whitley added 13. Curt Garza led North Branch with 16 points, and Mike Stone chipped in 12. Frankenmuth (9-1, 7-1) hosts Ithaca on Friday, and North Branch (5-8, 2-6) plays St. Louis.

Vassar 39, Cass City 26: The Vulcans won a defensive battle over the Red Hawks in Cass City on Friday night, and moved their conference record to .500 in the process. Vassar opened up a 17-2 lead after the first quarter, and led Cass City 27-9 at halftime. Colton Fabbro led the Vulcans with a game-high 13 points, while Tyler Humpert contributed seven points, 14 rebounds, and five steals. Parker Haire and Kyle Ross scored seven points apiece for Cass City. Vassar (8-3, 2-2) visits first-place Bad Axe Wednesday, and the Red Hawks (3-7, 1-2) travel to Reese.

International Academy of Flint 67, Akron-Fairgrove 48: The Vikings played the first-place Phoenix tough Friday night in this Michigan Summit League game, but came up short in the fourth quarter . Akron-Fairgrove trailed by only four points at the half, 29-25, and were down only 44-39 after the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, however, IAF — unbeaten in league play — went on a 23-8 tear to close out the win. The Vikings were led by Adrian Vliet, who scored 16 points, and Jeremy Verhelle who added 11. Akron-Fairgrove (7-4, 1-4) travels to Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy on Friday.

Carsonville-Port Sanilac 51, Mayville 48: The Wildcats dropped a back and fourth conference game Friday night at the hands of the Tigers. Mayville lost starting guard Craig Shaver early in the first quarter, but played tough all night. The Wildcats went into the final quarter with the lead, but CPS used some good shooting to take the lead, and the win. Dalton Bailey recorded a double-double for Mayville with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Andrew Morrison had 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Colton Burke came off the bench for the Wildcats and contributed eight points, three steals, and three assists. Mayville (3-5, 2-4) visits first place Kingston Tuesday.

Bad Axe 62, USA 49: The Hatchets took control of first place in the Greater Thumb Conference West Division by beating the Patriots on Friday night. Tommy Morneau scored a game-high 35 points for Bad Axe, while Aaron Saenz poured in 27 points for the Patriots. USA (6-3, 2-2) visits Nouvel Catholic Central on Wednesday.

Kingston 43, Deckerville 32: The Cardinals went on the road to capture a win in the North Central Thumb League, winning their seventh straight game in the process. “Deckerville gave us all we could handle tonight,” said Kingston coach Dave Lester. “To our kids’ credit we finished the game strong with a strong fourth quarter.” Aaron VanHorn filled the stat sheet in the win with 13 points, seven rebounds, six steals and three assists for Kingston. Travis Tucker added 12 points.
