Tammy Lynn Shonk of Mayville, age 32, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Tammy was born February 3, 1983 in Saginaw, the daughter of Riley and Joanie (Swaffer) Petty, and was a 2002 graduate of Vassar High School. She raised horses while she was growing up and maintained her love of them throughout her life. Tammy was united in marriage with Caleb Shonk on November 2, 2010 in Caro, and he survives her. She was most recently employed as a cashier at Wal-Mart and as a personal assistant for Wellspring Lutheran Home Care, however, her most important job was that of being a mother to her son, Carlen. Tammy was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Vassar, a volunteer for Relay for Life and a member of the Family Readiness Group, a family support group for 1-182nd FA Battalion. She was a country music fan and enjoyed the Maple Syrup Festival in Shepherd. Tammy is survived by her loving husband, Caleb; son, Carlen William; her parents, Riley and Joanie Petty; one sister and two brothers, Victoria Petty of Vassar, Wayne Petty of Bay City, Michael Petty and his wife, Angie, of Oxford; father- and mother-in-law, Carl and Alice Shonk of Mayville; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Rachael and Leland Ackerman of Mayville, Caitlin and Joshua Burns of Caro, Rebekah Shonk of Caro, Andrew Shonk of Caro; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Vassar with Pastor Christopher White officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Vassar. The family will be present to receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Monday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Shonk Family Discretionary Fund. c/o Caleb Shonk, 205 West Sherman Street, Caro, MI 48723.
