CASS CITY — More than 100 students, staff and parents participated in Bike to School Day at Cass City Elementary School on Friday.
Participants met at 7:15 a.m. by the Cass City Public Schools bus garage and rode their bicycles on a mapped route throughout the city.
The city’s fire and police departments assisted with blocking off streets for the event, and the school’s food service department provided smoothies to each participant at the ride’s conclusion.
Each participant will also receive a water bottle this week from Independent Bank, the event’s sponsor.
Although National Bike to School Day is May 6, Cass City Elementary School postponed the activity due to scheduling conflicts.
This year marked the fourth year the National Center for Safe Routes to School has promoted the program, but this is the first year Cass City Elementary has participated.
“I think the kids seemed to respond really well,” said Physical Education Teacher Adam Dorland, who noted the school plans to participate annually.
Bike to School Day serves as a way to keep children active and also promotes using safe routes to arrive to school.
Dorland and staff members Kathy Dorland, Beth Howard, Kathy LaPonsie and Rebecca Walker sit on a school committee that organized the event.
