GAGETOWN — An icon of Gagetown Village government resigned this month.

After 40 years of serving his community, Chuck Wright submitted his letter of resignation Aug. 31 because of health issues. The council accepted his resignation with “deep regret.”

Wright served for 40 years on the Gagetown Village Council with 21 of those years as president.

During his tenure, he and the village saw several changes to his community.

“We are getting smaller and have less money to operate with,” said Wright.

A few of  the projects Wright helped herald were major upgrades to the water and sewer systems, street paving and improvements, and a major clean up contamination of a former manufacturing site.

“And, the village has its own hall now,” he noted.

Until last year, the village of Gagetown and Elmwood Township shared a hall. In 2012,  Independent Bank closed its branch in Gagetown and gave the facility to the village to use as their village hall.

Also, Wright worked for UPS for 34 years before he retired, but he wasn’t idle. He drove school bus for the Owendale – Gagetown School District for 10 years, and also served on the fire department for several years as well with many of those years as fire chief.

“I plan to relax now, enjoy my family, and spend more time with my grand kids,” said Wright.

Wright and his wife, Judy, have five grandchildren, one great-grand child and another great-grand child due in a few months.
