Georgene “Gene” Palmer, Cass City

Georgene Palmer, 98, of Cass City, died Sunday, July 26, 2015 in Northwood Meadows Medical Care Unit, Cass City. She was born March 14, 1917 in Caro to Grant and Yulu (Smith) VanWinkle. She married Carleton Atwood Palmer July 6, 1938 at the family home in Cass City. He died January 4, 2004. Gene worked a few jobs in her younger years including working for Detroit Edison, the phone company and as sound person at the Cass Theatre. Gene attended a year of business/secretarial school at Central Michigan University after her graduation from Cass City High School. She later worked at the Caro Drug Store and a local golf course. But Gene’s life work was by her husband’s side on their dairy farm in Marlette that they worked together for over 25 years. She was an avid bird watcher, able to identify most birds she saw. Gene enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and cooking. She volunteered as a 4-H Leader teaching cooking and sewing. Gene enjoyed deer and small game hunting in years past. She loved animals. Gene enjoyed playing golf in leagues in Cass City, Caro and Marlette. She was an avid Bridge player and played until she was 95 years old when she decided she was too old to play any longer. Gene had a quick wit right up to the end and always had a one liner to offer. Gene is survived by her children: Linda Palmer of Ann Arbor, Fran Palmer Lovejoy of Cass City, Mary (Michael) Daniels of Wales Township, Thomas (Carol) Palmer of Deford; grandchildren: Jonathan (Faouzie Alchahal) Kuehnle, Amy (Randy) Schuette, Sarah Lovejoy, Rebecca Bass, Michael Kastorf, Leena Palmer, Grant Palmer, Jack (Mandy) Palmer, Blake (Trisha) Palmer, Alex (Josie) Palmer; great-grandchildren: Erin (John) Tuckey, Emily, Olivia, Allison, Alex, Steven, Meghan, Jamison, Thomas; several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brother, Richard VanWinkle; sister, Sharlie Wilsie. A private family graveside service will be held 12:00 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2015 at her graveside in Indianfields Township Cemetery, Caro with Debra L. Kranz, Funeral Service Celebrant officiating. Interment will be in Indianfields Township Cemetery, Caro. Memorials may be made to United Hospice of Marlette or Cass River Pet Friendz.
