MILLINGTON – The Millington Community School district went into a modified lockdown earlier this week due to a parent entering the Kirk Elementary School carrying a weapon legally under Michigan’s Open Carry Law.

“A parent came into Kirk Elementary (on Monday) openly carrying a weapon which is her constitutional right,” explained Superintendent John Males. “Per the law, our school and our lawyers, she had the right to do so. Our school officials, however, have the reasonable right to maintain the health and safety of everyone in the building.”

According to Males, the parent was detained in the school office until leaving the building. The parent said she would return to demonstrate her constitutional right, Males added.

“We will continue to do what we need to do in order to protect the safety of our students and everyone in our buildings,” Males said.

The Millington district also has plans to enhance its security system in the Kirk building and Meachum Junior High School over its winter recess, Males added. The enhanced system will allow for an additional security checkpoint before visitors may enter the buildings. There will be an enhanced security system put into place in the vestibules of each building which will force visitors to enter into the office before entering the buildings, Males explained.
