Garbage assessment eyed

VASSAR — Vassar Township officials are considering creating a special assessment district for garbage service throughout the township.

There will be a public hearing on the issue 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the township hall at 4505 W. Saginaw Rd., Vassar, on the proposed issue.

It is estimated the cost could be about $189,650 the first year and that a special assessment spread over six years would generate about $1,148,633 to cover the cost.

During hearing residents will have an opportunity to make comments and ask questions.

If the board decides to continue exploring a township-wide special assessment for garbage collection there will be a second public hearing later with more details.

Signal change

LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation allowing bicyclists to use an alternate right-turn signal, which will make it easier for motorists to understand and help make roads safer for everyone.

“This is a simple, common-sense update that will help keep our roads safe,” Snyder said.

House Bill 4866, updates existing law from 1949 that required bicyclists to raise their left arm at a 90-degree angle to signal a right turn. The law was passed at a time when most automobiles lacked turn indicators and motorists also had to use hand signals. The bill updates the law to allow bikers to simply extend their right arm horizontally to signal a right-turn as well.

The bill is now Public Act 1 of 2014.

Festival plans

FAIRGROVE — Plans are being made for the next Michigan Bean Festival in September.

The committee determined the theme for this year’s festival will be “Mardi Gras. Let the good times roll,” and tentative plans are to have go carts friday, the demolition derby Saturday, and the mud bog Sunday.

The next meeting is 6 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Fairgrove Village Hall.

Location change

CASS CITY — Starting this month, the Cass City School District’s Board of Education meetings will be 7 p.m., in the board room of the superintendent’s office instead of in the library.

That meeting will be 7 p.m., Feb. 24.
