REESE — A Reese man was sentenced this week to 7-25 years for assault with intent to murder among other charges.
Jonathan Elbers, 24, was sentenced Thursday in Macomb County court to five counts including assault with intent to murder; home invasion; unlawful imprisonment; police officer assaulting/ resisting/obstructing; larceny in a building.
Elbers faced the charges after showing up to the Chesterfield Township home of his ex-girlfriend unnannounced last April and upset over their recent break-up.
According to Chesterfield Township police reports, she was unable to reason with Elbers and he ultimately forced her into the basement where he was in the process of binding her and placing her in a large “Christmas Tree” bag when police arrived.
The victim told officers that while Elbers was choking her and forcing her into the bag, he was telling her that he was going to put her into the back of his truck and shoot her in the head.
When confronted by officers, Elbers refused to comply with their commands and struggled with them. He broke free and fled on foot where he remained at large for three days.
Elbers did not have a violent criminal history and was taken into custody without incident and cooperated with investigators.
Elbers was brought to trial on January 7, 2014, where he pleaded no contest to the five charges.
At the sentencing Thursday, he was given 7-25 years with 319 days credit for assault with intent to murder; 7-20 years with 319 days credit for home invasion; 7-15 years with 319 days credit for unlawful imprisonment; 24-48 months with 319 days credit for police officer assaulting/ resisting/ obstructing; 24-48 months with 319 days credit for larceny in a building. All counts will run concurrent with each other.
