Farm toy show

FAIRGROVE — There will be a farm toy and craft show 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Fairgrove Fire Department Saturday (today).

 

Spelling bee

FAIRGROVE — The annual Tuscola County Spelling Bee will be held Thursday, March 6 in the Akron – Fairgrove Junior/Senior High school  gym.

 

Budget hearing

REESE — The Reese Village Council will host a hearing on the proposed 2014 – 2015 budget 7 p.m., Monday, March 10, at the village hall, 2073 Gates St., Reese.

 

Author visits

CARO — Local Author Dave Vizard will talk about his book, “A Formula for Murder,” 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, at the Caro Area District Library.

The fictional story is set in Bay City. It features city landmarks as well as various places in the Thumb.

Vizard, who is a former editor of the Bay City Times newspaper, will do an inter-active book signing at the event, and talk about the writing and publishing process.

 

Filing help

UNIONVILLE — The Columbia Township Library is partnering with John Walsh CPA to provide free preparation and e-filing of Michigan Homestead Credit and/or  Michigan Home Heating Credit.

The service will be provided on Wednesday, March 19 at the Columbia Township Library, 6456 Center Street, Unionville

This service is for credit only filers. Call (989) 674-2651 for an appointment time and details.

 

Wages increased

CARO — Approval was given to raise the wage from $8.25 per hour to $9.25 per hour for Tuscola County Mosquito Abatement Technicians.

The change was approved to help attract workers, for employee retention, and because there hasn’t been a wage increase in 14 years.

 

Truck purchased

AKRON — Akron Village officials approved the purchase of a 1999 Ford F-450 Super Duty Rescue Truck for $1 for the fire department.

The department will take sealed bids to sell the squad vehicle with the proceeds going towards new equipment for the new rescue truck.

 

New Road signs

CASS CITY — The Tuscola County Road Commission approved a “truck-route specialty” highway sign on Wilsie Road and one on Cemetery Road for Walther Farms.

The five-member board also approved upgrading the lighting system at the Caro road commission site, and noted that a government rebate would be used to help offset the cost. Plus, the possibility of using solar power at that site is being explored as well as grants available.

 

Sewer rate increase

REESE — Reese Village residents will see a rate increase on their sanitary sewer bill starting April 1.

The quarterly rate will increase from $18 per quarter to $32 per quarter per Residential Equivalent Unit (REU), and the quarterly use rate of $1.79 per 1,000 gallons of water used will increase to $2.40 per 1,000 gallons of water used.

The revenue generated from the increase will be used for emergency maintenance and future improvements to the system.
