Thomas B. Sanborn of Caro, age 61, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw, following a courageous battle with A.L.S. Tom was born March 23, 1952 in Caro, the son of Donald & Fonda (Lewis) Sanborn and graduated from Caro High School with the class 1970. Following his graduation, Tom enlisted with the U.S. Army where he served as a tank mechanic until his honorable discharge in 1973. He then worked as a Deputy Sheriff for Polk County, Florida until 1976 when he reenlisted with the Army until his retirement in 1994 as a Master Sergeant. Tom also spent many years working as a home health care nurse and owned a home improvement business until 2005. It was also in 2005 that Tom was united in marriage with his soul mate, the former Cindy (Layer) Crawford in Caro. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Tuscola County Conservation Club where he and Cindy enjoyed target practice. A true man’s man, Tom enjoyed watching MMA fighting, restoring old cars and driving fast ones, but would show his soft side to his wife and kids as he constantly reminded them to, “Stay Alert, Stay Alive.” Tom is survived by his loving wife, Cindy Sanborn of Caro; four children, Cyndi Sanborn-Tiller of Winchester, Kentucky, Robert Sanborn and his wife, Charidy of Phenix City, Alabama, Bethany (Crawford) Hill and her husband, Matthew of Caro, Cevin Crawford of Reese; six grandchildren, Kyndall Tiller, Robert, Jr., Nathan, and Faith Sanborn, Livia Ganley, Ayla Hill; his mother, Fonda Bennett of Ft. Meade, Florida; four sisters and their spouses, Marie Pfaff of Caro, Jean Madden of Frostproof, Florida, Kathy & Kenny Gainer of Mulberry, Florida, Shari & James Reed III of Winter Haven, Florida; his mother-in-law, Pauline Layer of Caro; and many nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his father, Donald Sanborn; and his father-in-law, Lloyd Layer. Funeral services was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro with Chaplain Robert Van Allen officiating. Military honors will follow the service under the auspices of Caro VFW Post #4164 and the U.S. Army.
