Caro students learn about flag-flying etiquette
CARO — Schall Elementary School students learned how to show respect to the American Flag at a special presentation Thursday morning.
Members of the Caro Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4164 were on hand at the Schall gymnasium, showing students how to fold the flag and explaining what each of the 13 folds meant.
Kerry Anderson and Caro Post Commander Bob Schank demonstrated the folding of the flag, and then Bob Berry had the students form a parade to teach students how to salute the flag as it passes during a parade.
After the presentation, the Caro VFW passed out mini flags to the kids, as well as pamphlets detailing flag etiquette.
Mary Lou Earl, chair of the VFW Auxiliary’s Americanism Program, told the students that the VFW has a dropbox where people can properly dispose tattered American flags, and that the students should never let the flag touch the ground.
“We want to always respect our flag,” she said.
