DENMARK TOWNSHIP — Denmark Township officials discussed possible options, during their regular session on Monday, for repayment of the $395,000 to the county for its financial backing of the 2010 proposed new water district which was later canceled.

Denmark Township board members plan to meet with Tuscola County officials following the township’s financial audit which is scheduled on Aug. 27 and 28. The audit will provide a better blueprint of the township’s financial status.

As reported earlier this month in the Tuscola County Advertiser, the county has two options to recoup the money. One is taking state revenue sent to the township, (like a garnishee), or levying a tax assessment on each property.

Between the bonds, legal fees, and other costs, it is estimated Denmark Township residents could see about a 5 mil levy on their 2013 winter tax bill for one year to satisfy the debt. On a home valued at $100,000 that would mean $250 more in taxes.

Township officials have until Oct. 1 to make payment or partial payment arrangements with the county before an additional millage could be added to residents’ December tax bills.

Among other action, board members passed a motion approving two ballot proposals for a 1 mill renewal and an additional 1 mill for township road repairs. The proposals will be on the Nov. 5 ballot.

The next meeting of the Denmark Township board of trustees will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 26 at the Denmark Township Hall.
