TUSCOLA COUNTY — As part of spring cleaning, the Tuscola County recycling center urges county residents to properly dispose of household hazardous waste and latex paint.
The recycling center at 1123 Mertz Rd. (M-24), Caro, will host a household hazardous and latex paint collection starting at 9 a.m., Saturday (today). To participate, an appointment must be scheduled by calling the center at (989) 672-1673.
Hazardous waste is a product that is toxic, flammable, caustic or chemically reactive. Key words found on such containers are danger, poison, warning, and caution. Such items should not be poured down drains, onto the ground, or trash. Some examples of such items include: oil based paints, stains, home repair products, cleaners, contaminated oil, pesticides, herbicides, and mercury.
If you have any of these items that you will no loner use, or think they are unsafe to use this is the way to responsibly dispose of them, according to recycling coordinator Mike Miller noting that water based paints will also be collected during the event.
There is no fee to participate for Tuscola County residents.
Miller pointed out that reducing the amount of hazardous waste is to limit the amount bought, and to look for items that are environmentally friendly.
