Walter Stephen Kutchins of Caro, age 92, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 26, 2013 at Covenant Health Care – Cooper in Saginaw. Walter was born September 14, 1920 in Hamtramck, and was a graduate of Hamtramck High School. His road to East Lansing and Michigan State University was paved with hard work and a football scholarship, where he earned a BS in engineering. Walter was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was stationed at Los Alamos, where he assisted in the development of the hydrogen bomb. Walter was united in marriage with the former Annette Berry in 1943, and she preceded him in death in 1995. He then married Doris Moore on May 31, 1997 at Caro United Methodist Church. Upon returning from the service, Walter spent his working life as a developer and contractor in commercial and municipal construction, including condos, malls and highways. He was also a very proud alumnus of Michigan State University. He and his wife were called Walter and Doris Kutchins (Golf Bums) of Harbor Springs, The Villages, and Caro, having played golf around the world. Walter is survived by his wife, Doris; three children and a step-daughter; his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jody Anne and all of his siblings. Funeral service took place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Caro United Methodist Church with Rev. Gregg Mayberry officiating. In accordance with Walter’s wishes, cremation followed the service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Evans Caddie Scholarship Program.
