Ramona went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at Timberline AFC Home in Caro. She was 85 years old. Ramona was born January 2, 1929 in Madison, Nebraska, the daughter of the late Elton Henry & Frances (Hankla) Schmitt. She was united in marriage with Harold Archie Thane on February 14, 1971 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Following their marriage, they came to Caro to live. He preceded her in death on May 10, 1997. Before coming to Caro, Ramona received her BA degree from Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebraska in 1963 and taught school in Sidney, Nebraska for fourteen years. Ramona was very musical and played the piano and sang in many groups throughout her life, including a trio in high school, and for her church in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. After moving to Caro, she was a substitute teacher in Tuscola County for twenty years and earned her state teaching certificate at Saginaw Valley State University. Ramona was a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and volunteered in classrooms for Caro Schools. Ramona was a member of the Sutton-Sunshine United Methodist Church for many years, where she taught Sunday School, was the church pianist for several years and sang in the church choir. She later became a member of the Caro Nazarene Church. Ramona is survived by one sister, Alta E. (Keith) Kumm of Holyoke, Colorado; sisters-in-law, Loretta Thane of Cass City and Florence Thane of Sebewaing; nephew, Daryl (Rosona) Schmitt of Duncan, Oklahoma. She is also survived by step-children, Lois (Lonis) Livingston, Kay Thane, Alice & Edward Slater, Jean & Gary McPherron, Elaine & Fred Bardwell; and many step-grandchildren, -great-grandchildren and -nieces and -nephews. In addition to her husband, Harold, Ramona was preceded in death by one brother, Glenn; Harold’s two brothers, Willis and Garth; sisters Edwina, Gladys, Catherine; sisters-in-law, Cleta Schmitt and Maxine Bell; step-sons Floyd, Leonard Thane and Norbert Fader; and step-daughter, Marilyn Fader. Ramona was loved by all. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home with Rev. Paul McNett officiating. Burial will follow at the Almer Township Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. The family was assisted with these arrangements by the Ransford Collon Funeral Home of Caro.
