MILLINGTON — Longtime resident and current Millington Township Supervisor Terry Jones was announced as the Millington Old-Fashioned Summer Festival’s 2013 Most Honored Citizen during the Old Fashioned Picnic themed event on Thursday.
Jones was born in Maryland, but with family ties in Millington his family moved to the area in the early 1960s. Jones graduated from Millington High School in 1968. He later married Susan Shrum and the two have two sons, Scott and Terry; and five grandchildren, Madison, Cameron, Mekenzie, Zoe and Lauren.
Jones was honored as Millington’s Most Honored Citizen for his involvement with the Jaycees, the Millington Little League, the Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs, and the Meachum Junior High and Millington High School Boosters which support the girls’ and boys’ programs. He has also been a recipient of the Thumb Meet of Champs Friend of Youth, explained Most Honored Citizen chairperson Sheila Hebner.
During his 17 years of service to little league, the program was able to improve the current ball fields, add a new concession stand and storage building, which was named after the 1974 Most Honored Citizen Ken “Fleet” Gleason, and a new high school baseball field, which was named after the 2000 Most Honored Citizen Harry Kern.
In recent years, Jones has assisted the Millington Summer Festival committee whenever possible and is currently an assistant coach with the Tuscola Softball program and an active member of the Millington Lions Club.
Jones retired from General Motors in 2009 and has been very busy with family and local government as the current Millington Township Supervisor since that time.
“Terry was very humbled to accept this honor so be sure to say “hi and congratulations’ if you should meet him,” Hebner added.
The Millington Old-Fashioned Summer Festival will continue through this weekend with a car show, kids’ parade, Tricycle Race, Living History Display of the 42nd Regiment of Scottish Highlanders, two rodeos by Twisted P Rodeo and the Millington’s Got Talent finals on tap today. The festival will conclude on Sunday with a Hymn and Gospel Sing at 6 p.m. at the Bus Stop Tent. An ice cream social, sponsored by the Millington Baptist Church, will follow.
