Elroy David O’Connor of Akron, age 74, passed away on Monday, September 22, 2014 at his residence, following a period of declining health. Elroy was born January 1, 1940 in Detroit, the son of the late Elroy and Phyllis (Robinson) O’Connor. He was united in marriage with Phyllis Turner on September 20, 1958 in Caro. Dave served in the Michigan National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve. He was employed as a millwright at Eaton and then at Grede Foundry in Vassar until his retirement. Dave loved hunting and fishing, and was active in the Tuscola County Archery Club where he served in many positions. He was a member and past Lieutenant Governor of the Michigan Bow Hunters District 6. Dave was also a member of the N.R.A. and taught hunter safety for many years. In earlier years, he attended the Akron Presbyterian Church. Dave is survived by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Phyllis O’Connor; three children, Mark & Jill O’Connor of Vassar, Deborah & Richard Wagner, Jr. of Fairgrove, Rhonda & Doug Hartley of Drummond Island; six grandchildren, Rick Wagner, Brandon Wagner, Ryan O’ Connor, Anna O’Connor, Jordan Hartley and Ethan Hartley; his siblings, Pat Buniack of Caro, Gary & Pat O’Connor of Caro; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his step-father, Stephan Bennick; and a brother-in-law, George Buniack. In keeping with Dave’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the Vassar First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Doug Abel and Rev. Michelle Hile officiating. Military honors will be rendered at the church following the service.
