Mary Kathleen Utich of Caro, age 93, passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2014 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Community, following a lingering illness. Mary was born April 1, 1921 in Detroit, the daughter of the late Valda and Kathryn (McGuire) Marvin. She was united in marriage with Alvin Edward Utich in 1952, and he preceded her in death in 1974. Mary graduated from Detroit Public Schools and held a Master’s Degree from Wayne State University. She was employed as an elementary school teacher in the Detroit Public School system for thirty-seven years. After her retirement, she lived in Cass City for a short period of time and then moved to Caro in 1996. Mary enjoyed horse racing and owned horses for several years, and also enjoyed shooting her pistol and bow hunting. Her favorite reading was Field and Stream. After her husband’s death, Mary traveled around the world and lived in China for a month. Mary was a member of the Catholic faith. Mary has outlived most of her family and her only survivor is her husband’s great-niece, Joanne Humphrey of St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Cremation has taken place and internment will be at a later date at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Detroit. The family was assisted with these arrangements by the Ransford Collon Funeral Home of Caro.
