THUMB AREA — The “doctor” is in the house.
Voters in both Tuscola and Huron counties picked Republican Doctor Edward J. Canfield as the 84th State Rep. In Tuscola County, he received 9,801 votes while challenger Democrat David Jaroch received 6,635 votes. In Huron County, Canfield received 6,816 votes and Jaroch 4,744.
Republican 31st District Senator Mike Green defeated Ron Mindykowski to be returned to office. Green had 44,833 votes to 37,339 votes for Mindykowski.
Thumb area voters followed the state trend to return: Republican Rick Snyder as governor with 9,412 votes to Democratic challenger Mark Schauer’s 7,188 votes in Tuscola; and 7,141 votes in Huron for Snyder to Schauer’s 4,378 votes.
Also, Republican Ruth Johnson continues as Secretary of State, Bill Schuette returns as Attorney General, and Candice Miller as 10th Congressional Rep.
Democrats Daniel Kildee was returned to office as Congres-sional 5th District Rep., and Gary Peters as U.S. Senator edged out Terry Lynn Land to replace Carl Levin.
While The Advertiser was able to run most of the unofficial election results in Wednesday’s edition, the results were not complete because the totals from Almer Charter and Indianfields townships were not available as of press time Tuesday night.
The following is an update of election results:
Incumbent District No. 2 Commissioner Thomas Bardwell received 1,900 votes to edge out Democrat Rick Jones’ 1,121 votes.
The Indianfields Township road millage request passed 413 yes to 350 no votes, and the request for fire protection passed 543 yes to 221 no votes.
Although the Tuscola County Board of Canvassers completed the verification of election results in the county; those numbers are not the final tally, because some school districts, libraries, and a village are in more than one county and the election canvassers there are still working.
The following is the unofficial updated election totals from entities that are in more than one county. There was an upset in the Kingston and Millington school districts and in the village of Reese with newcomers edging out incumbents.
The Cass City School District: is in Tuscola, Huron, and Sanilac counties. Those who won the education seats were – Stacey Bliss with 1,464 votes, David Osentoski with 1,567 votes, and Alice Zaleski with 1,462 votes.
The millage proposal for the district’s operation millage passed 1,546 yes votes to 751 no.
Kingston School District: is in Tuscola and Lapeer counties, and there was an upset with a newcomer defeating an incumbent.
For the board of education seats: incumbents Sherri Diegel received 566 votes, Jason Koehler 478 votes, and newcomer Jeffrey Long received 400 votes to edge out Zachary Boyl who received 389 votes. And, for the partial seat David Kolacz received 749 votes.
Mayville Schools – is in Tuscola and Lapeer counties. For the board of education seats, incumbents Frank Franzel received 1,310 votes, Ron Johnson received 1,109 votes, and newcomers Michelle Daniel received 898 votes, and Nathan Phillips received 1,034 votes.
The Millington School District is in both Tuscola and Genesee counties, and there was an upset with an incumbent being defeated.
For the board of education seats, newcomers Angela Germain received, 2,106 votes, Michael Sherman received 1,773 , and Mathew Slough received 1,647. Incumbent John Crump received 1,357 votes.
The Reese School District is in Tuscola, Saginaw and Bay counties. The lone candidate for the three expiring seats was Jim Goka who received 1,522 votes.
Also, the village of Reese is in Tuscola and Saginaw counties. Incumbent Jerry Ellison received 481 votes for president. Also, there was an upset for the trustee seats. Incumbents Tim Elbers received 364 votes, Paul Keast received 292 votes, and newcomer Courtney Ross received 322 to edge out Richard Olver with 264 votes.
The Reese Unity Library’s request for operating millage passed with 1,469 votes to 482 no votes.
