MELVIN J. MARTIN Vassar, Michigan Melvin Jay Martin, age 95 years, passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Covenant Health Care in Saginaw. He was born on February 6, 1919 in Vassar, the son of the late William J. and Anna H. (Kennard) Martin. On November 2, 1940 he married Helen Rausch at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Richville, and she preceded him in death on April 20, 2008 after 67 years of marriage. Mel retired from General Motors – Grey Iron in Saginaw after 25 years of service and also was a Realtor for Rausch Reality for many years. Surviving family include his son, Thomas Martin; grandson, Steve (Connie Wickings) Martin; niece, Barbara (Herbert) VanDusan; nephews, Bradley (Judith) Martin, Lavern (Nancy) Martin, Perry (Rhonda) Martin and Dennis (Jackie) Martin and many other nieces and nephews. Mel was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; son, Duane and 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 15, 2014 at the Penzien-Steele Funeral Home, 149 N. Main St. in Vassar. Pastor David G. Somers officiating, with burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
