MAYVILLE — Coach Andrew Beauvais’ Akron-Fairgrove Vikings like to take the basketball away from opponents, and they were at it again here Friday night.
“We had 17 steals as a team,” said Beauvais, whose squad defeated Mayville, 56-24.
“We pressed them in the first half and generated a lot of turnovers,” Beauvais said.
Eight different Vikings made steals, led by Kaitlyn Burton with four. The steals ignited the Akron-Fairgrove offense, with Emily Wagner scoring a game-high 20 points and Ally Reif adding 11.
Jimi Harris led the Mayville offense with 10 points, while Lauryn Frenzel and Miranda Zaremba added five points apiece.
Zaremba led Mayville with 10 rebounds, while Franks grabbed nine rebounds and Harris pulled down six for coach Dave Patterson’s squad.
Millington 77, Essexville-Garber 37: The young Lady Cardinal basketball team put on a show Thursday night at home breaking the school record for most points in a game with 77 points. The previous record was 75. “We are a young team,” said coach Aaron Chamberlain. “ We only have one senior, and the rest of the team are sophmores and freshman, so we had struggled to start the season,” he added. This game was just the breakout performance the Lady Cards needed. “As the game went on, you could see the confidence in the players growing. You could see the girls playing a lot more confortable, and by the second half the success was building on itself,” Coach Chamberlain said. Millington outscored Garber 45-15 in the second half, including a 25-8 run in the fourth quarter. Molly Wolfington led the scoring attack for Millington with 21 points. Four other Cardinal players scored in double digits in points: Elizabeth Selich (14), Ashlee Chema (12), Haley Trickey (12), and Jenna Meachem (11). “We’re moving in the right directon,” Chamberlain said. After starting the season 0-4, Millington now goes into the Christmas break with their first win. The Cardinals will return to the court January 5th to play LakeVille.
LakeVille 44, Caro 36: The Tigers played the Falcons tough Thursday, but a 26-19 run in the second half led LakeVille to the conference victory. Caro was down by only one point at halftime, before being outscored 14-9 in the third. “We were down by 10 points in the fourth, and cut it down to only a two-point game, but we just couldn’t get over the hump,” said Caro coach Jeff Sauser. Jennifer Gutierrez hit two three-pointers in the fourth to get her team back into it. “They are a good team, and they got the better of us tonight,” Sauser added. Gutierrez had 12 points for the Tigers, and Melissa Cockerill scored a game-high 13. Taylor Granger led LakeVillle with a double-double scoring 10, and grabbing 10 rebounds. Caro (3-2, 2-1) will return to the court Jan. 6 against conference opponent North Branch.
Unionville-Sebewaing Area 58, Cass City 16: The Patriots started off on a 20-5 run en route to a victory over the Cass City Red Hawks on the road Thursday. The Patriots were led by Nicole Bauer with 14 points and Marisa Morton with 10 points, while the Red Hawks’ Alliah Riddle had five points. The Patriots (4-1, 2-0) host Saginaw Nouvel Jan. 6. Cass City (2-4, 0-2) will play host to Ubly also on Jan. 6.
Kingston 46, Marlette 41: The Kingston Cardinals kicked off a doubleheader on Friday in Marlette with a come-from-behind victory over the Marlette Red Raiders. “The girls came out focused and made winning plays down the stretch,” coach Jay Green commented about the fourth-quarter play of his team. The Cardinals outscored Marlette in the fourth quarter, 17-8, including a late three-pointer from Jenna Boyl to give them the lead. Boyl led the way for the Cardinals with 19 points. Cassidy MacGuire added 11 points, and went 4-4 from the foul line down the stretch. Marlette’s leading scorer was Haley Cross, who ended the night with a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, Caitlin Quade also had 11 points, and MacKenzie Kelly added eight points. Marlette returns to the hardwood after winter break Jan. 6 at Laker, while Kingston will participate in the Harry Moore Classic on Dec. 29 in Brown City.
Reese 54, Laker High 34: Reyna Frost had a big first half Wednesday night scoring 22 of the Rockets’ 30 first-half points, on her way to a game-high 34 points. “Reyna just had a monster game,” said Reese coach Denny Gruber. Frost added 19 rebounds to earn her fifth double-double in as many games this season. She also collected six steals and five blocked shots. Maddie Coulter added five points and eight assists for Reese, which saw Emily Fleischmann scored five points and haul down eight rebounds. Mariah Cook led Laker High with 11 points.
Frankenmuth 63, Bridgeport 15: The Eagles rolled to their third conference win of the season Thursday night. Frankenmuth (5-1, 3-0) led from start to finish after jumping out to a 22-2 lead in the first quarter. Madison Walter scored a game-high 21 points for Frankenmuth, and Brayene Benner had 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Birch Run 45, North Branch 23: The Broncos fell to the undefeated Panthers Thursday night on the road. North Branch was led in scoring by Kyla Dutcher and Calla McNulty who both scored seven points. Birch Run (6-0) was led by Kalyn Breckenridge who scored a game-high 11 points. North Branch (0-5, 0-2) will play its next game on the road against non-conference opponent Brown City on Dec. 29, in the Harry Moore Classic.
