VASSAR — Police say an employee of the Radio Shack here embezzled between $20,000 and $50,000 from the business during a five-month period.

Tracy L. Vaughn, 42, of Tuscola Township, is charged with embezzlement of that amount by agent or trustee. The crime carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $15,000 fine, or a fine three times the amount embezzled — whichever amount is greater.

A hearing on the evidence is set for 8:29 a.m. on Monday. Vaughn remains free on her own recognizance following her Dec. 1 arrest.

Prosecutors allege Vaughn took money or personal property from Dec. 1, 2013 to April 28, 2014. Tuscola County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Eric F. Wanink alleges the crime was “discovered internally” after that time period.

Vassar Police Department officers investigated the case.

If Vaughn is ordered to pay a fine three times the amount of money embezzled, she must admit to the amount or it must be determined by the trier of fact at trial.

The Advertiser could not reach Vaughn’s attorney, Flint lawyer Jeffrey E. Clothier, for comment.

Dave and Danielle Hunkins own the Radio Shack, according to Tuscola County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Eric F. Wanink.

The prosecutor alleges Vaughn took “a combination of money and property,” though he added that “I can’t tell you exactly what (Vaughn’s alleged) method of operation was.”
