Terry Reid, a longtime coach, teacher and school administrator in Marlette, died peacefully amid family members and friends Saturday, August 8, 2015 at his home. He was 76. Terry was born October 6, 1938, in Detroit to Ray and Eileen Reid. He married Jackie Hendry, his great love and best friend, on August 22, 1959. A 1956 graduate of Redford Union High School near Detroit and 1961 alumnus of Eastern Michigan University, Terry served his country as a U.S. Army officer for two years until 1963. While in the service, he coached his first basketball team at Killeen Base in Texas. After military discharge, Terry began his teaching and coaching career in the Redford Union district in 1963. In 1971-72, he was varsity basketball coach at Benedictine High School in the Detroit Catholic League. Terry and Jackie and their children moved to Marlette in 1972, where he was a teacher in the district until 1995, and athletic director for 20 years before stepping down from that role in 1999. However, Terry’s career was defined as “Coach”, particularly in basketball. He led the Red Raider girls basketball program for 21 seasons and coached Marlette boys in the game, at several levels, for about 25, years. From 1991 to ’97, he served as varsity coach of both the girls and boys. Under Terry, the Marlette girls were 315-149, improving from 1-19 the year before he took over the program to 22-2 three years later. Combined, his girls and boys varsity teams amassed more than 400 wins and multiple league and state-tournaments district titles-achievements for which he deferred to his players. For the past several years, including last season, he was a volunteer assistant coach for the Red Raider boys. Among Terry’s other Marlette coaching assignments were three years as varsity baseball coach in the mid-1970s, which included a league championship. Terry is survived by his wife, Jackie, and three children and their spouses: Traci and T.J. Horgan of Jeddo; T.R. and Dawn Reid of Georgetown, Texas; and Tammi and Mike Hall of Marlette. He was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren: Andrew and Colin Horgan; Adam and Carter Reid; and Derek, Kelsey, Kyle (in memory) and Dakota Hall. His spirit also lives on through thousands of students and friends he encountered, influenced and was inspired by during more than half century in education. Visitation for Terry was Monday, Aug. 10, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette, and Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Marlette High School. A funeral service was held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the high school’s Terry “Coach” Reid Gymnasium. The service will be officiated by Rev. Dave Mulder and Rev. Dan Bowman, current and former pastor of Marlette Untied Methodist Church. Pallbearers will be Terry’s grandchildren; honorary pallbearers will be coaching colleagues Jim Marshall, Chris Storm, Steve Ellis, Brent Wehner, John Cross and Tony Clark. A brief burial service at Marlette Cemetery immediately followed the funeral. Afterwards, the Marlette United Methodist Women served a luncheon at the St. Elizabeth Parish Hall at 6817 Marlette St. Terry’s family suggests memorials contribution to the Terry and Jackie Reid Scholarship, which is awarded annually to new Marlette High School graduates who have been leaders and role models through athletics and academics.
