Charles Thomas Zimmerman

Charles Thomas Zimmerman, age 84, died peacefully on December 17, 2013 after a long illness. He was born in Beloit, Wisconsin and graduated in 1951 from Beloit College and in 1956 from the University of Michigan Law School. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany, where he played in an army band. He was a member of the Dunkers, played euphonium in the Grand Rapids Symphonic and Calder City bands, enjoyed tennis, travel and singing in church choir. Charles was active in the Grand Rapids community. He served as President of the Grand Rapids Bar Association, Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, Vice President of the Grand Rapids Symphony, and President of Grand Rapids South Rotary Club. He was a board member of the United Way of Kent County, Family Services, Chamber Choir of Grand Rapids, and Porter Hills. He served on the Grand Rapids Foundation Professional Advisory Committee and the First United Methodist Church Board of Trustees. Charles is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anne; his daughter, Susan (Bruce) Fennema of Plainwell, MI; his son, William (Deborah) Zimmerman of Clawson, MI and their sons, Noah and Ethan. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 21 at First United Methodist Church, 227 Fulton St. E. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Salvation Army, Porter Hills Endowment Fund, or First United Methodist Church.
