Sally M. Nowland of Caro, age 83, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at her home, following a courageous battle with cancer.  Sally was born November 30, 1930 in Caro, the daughter of the late Leo & Anna (Riley) Wittie. Following the death of her father, she moved to Caro from Detroit with her mother and graduated from Caro High School with the class of 1948. On January 28, 1949, she was united in marriage with her high school sweetheart and constant companion, Robert Nowland, and they celebrated sixty-five years of marriage this month. After graduation, Sally was employed as a secretary for Frank Rolka and later worked for the Tuscola County Draft Board. She concluded her working career as a secretary in the Central Office at Caro Community Schools, a position she held for over ten years, retiring in 1991. She was an active member of the Caro United Methodist Church, the Caro and Vassar Golf Clubs and was a former member of the “Fuddy-Duddies” in Caro. Sally was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend that always had room in her home or around the pool for anyone to visit. Always on the move, she enjoyed bowling, golfing, walking and reading. She will be fondly remembered as the “Shopping Queen” by her family. Sally is survived by her loving husband, Robert Nowland of Caro; two daughters and their husbands, Barbara & James Miklovic of Caro, Mary & Scott Raymer of Caro; four grandsons and their spouses, Peter & Laurie Miklovic of Caro, Joseph & Amy Miklovic of Caro, Zachary Raymer of Ann Arbor, Gabriel Raymer of Caro; four great-grandsons, Bradley, Joey, Paul and Nathan Miklovic; and several cousins from the Fitzgerald and Riley families.  The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Grace Boxer and the University of Michigan Cancer Center for their expert care and compassion over the past two years. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2013 at the Caro United Methodist Church with Rev. Michele Hile officiating. The family will receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Caro Area District Library or the University of Michigan Cancer Center. The family was assisted with these arrangements by the Ransford Collon Funeral Home of Caro.  Friends may share memories, thoughts and prayers online at www.RansfordCollon.com.
