Age 89. Harold passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 10, 2013. He was born in Saginaw, to David and Marie (Miller) Zittel on Dec. 19, 1923. The family moved to several locations, until settling on a farm east of Reese. Harold attended Van Petten School and graduated from Reese High School in May 1941. He joined the U.S. Army Air Force in July 1942, and served in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations during WWII as tail gunner on a Mitchell B-25 bomber. Harold was awarded a Certificate of Valor for 55 combat missions, and was discharged in September 1945. Harold was a master carpenter by profession, and moved to Kansas City, MO, where he eventually owned his own construction company, building houses throughout the metropolitan area. He retired to Wheatland, MO, in 1986, and moved to Kingston, OK, in May 2012. Harold was an avid golfer and traveler, spending a number of years traveling the country in an RV. In his later years, he was an accomplished gardener, with friends and family being the grateful recipients of his labors. Harold was a life member of the Ararat Shrine Temple in Kansas City, MO, and a member of the Shrine Legion of Honor, serving as Commander in 1982. He was also a member of the VFW Post 9638 in Galmey, MO and the Masonic Lodge 279 in Wheatland, MO. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, all of his siblings (6 brothers and 3 sisters), and his wife, Mary Frances Zittel. Surviving family members include sons, Terry (Andrea) Zittel of Wylie, TX, and David (Renee) Zittel of Rapid City, SD; daughter, Peggy Anne (Bill) Hain of Kansas City, MO. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Mark, Michelle, LiAnn, Melissa, Michelle, Mark and Lisa; 15 great-grandchildren: Ashley, Heather, Nathan, Hunter, Andrew, Garret, Braeden, Leah, Braden, Kenna, Leia, Clara, Zoe, Grace and Lochlan; and 2 great-great-grandchildren: Hadley and Christopher; special friend, Loraine (Kabat) Smith of Reese, MI; brother-in-law, Tom (Karen) Wootton of Kingston, OK; and many nieces and nephews. According to Harold’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Inurnment of Harold’s cremains will take place in Saginaw, at a later date. Those wishing to make contributions in Harold’s memory may contribute to the Shrine Club or the VFW Post in Galmey, MO.
