THUMB AREA — Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) crews started the project of removing or modernizing signals at 24 locations throughout the Thumb to improve intersection operations.
Traffic studies were conducted to help identify unnecessary signals to be removed or replaced with stop signs and those to be upgraded.
In Tuscola County, work will be done this month on the M-15 traffic light at Main Street in Millington, on the M-15 light on Main Street in Vassar, on the M-24 light on Frank Street in Caro, and on the M-81 light at Burnside Street in Caro.
Also work will be done on the light at the intersection of M-24 and M-25 in downtown Unionville.
Then in September in the village of Cass City, work will be done on the M-81 light at Seeger Street, M-81 at Ale Street, and M-81 at Sherman Street.
Projects in the village of Sebewaing in Huron County include the light at M-25 and Main Street, M-25 and Bay Street – Sebewaing Road, and M-25 and Sharpsteen Street.
Work will be done in September in Sanilac County to the light at M-53 and M-81 in Greenleaf Township.
In addition, work at some locations includes sidewalk and ramp improvements compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) so motorists may experience short, intermittent delays while signal work is being done.
The projects will improve operations and increase safety for motorists at the intersections.
