Wayne A. Binder of Caro, age 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 7, 2014 with his loving wife by his side. Wayne was born April 18, 1923 in Bad Axe, the son of the late Irvin & Fay (Capling) Binder. He was a 1942 graduate of Caro High School and enlisted shortly after in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Wayne was the last living veteran from Tuscola County to see combat in Iwo Jima, and saw the flag shortly after it was raised there in 1945. Later that same year, Wayne was serving in Tokyo Bay during Japan’s formal surrender that ended the war. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Caro where he was united in marriage with the former Shirley G. Montei on August 8, 1947. During this time, he ran a gas station with his father and brother, Lester, until 1965. He went on to work with the construction company that built McComb Elementary School in Caro and later joined Franklin Turner and continued his building career. In 1967, Wayne built a chicken coop on his property and began an egg factory that he operated while also working with his brother, Rex Binder, on small engine repair. He retired in 1988, which allowed him to find his passion for raising miniature horses. His love for these gentle animals also afforded him time for two other favorite activities, spending time with his grandchildren and participating in area parades. Family and friends will remember Wayne for the love, wit and generosity he displayed throughout his life. He will have a lasting influence for many generations to come. Wayne was a member of the former Evangelical United Brethren Church in Caro and attended the Caro First Baptist Church. Wayne is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Shirley G. Binder of Caro; four children and their spouses, Deanna Schneider of Caro, Greg & Susan Binder of Cleveland, Ohio, Connie & Bill Hall of Grand Rapids, Allen Binder of Los Angeles, California; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Marc & Barbara Babich of Milford, Kristina & Michael Phipps of Caro, Melinda & Bhavin Shah of Columbus, Ohio, Victoria & Nathan Begue of Kingsport, Tennessee, Jonathon & D.d.
